The Australian winter is a tough season to combat fashionably. European and American Spring Summer collections are beginning to show, and the "trends" being released locally are yesterday's news in the international market. The style-savy woman like yourself is already bored and looking for the next exciting look to shake up the drab everyday norm that is soaking the Australian fashion market. It's exactly why our "end of season" sales take place at the beginning of the season!
Don't get me wrong - a select few buyers have the eye for pieces that will liven up your everyday wardrobe, but living in a continent that is always one step behind the international market can certainly become tiring. Why stay one step behind the rest of the world? This winter we have you covered - there's no need to invest in trends that you'll be sick of looking at this time next month! There is a SMART way to buy into winter pieces this season that will not only keep you ahead of the crowd this winter but also be wearable this time next year - because the best pieces are timeless. Here is The XY Venture's guide to making the most of the winter season and preparing for spring simultaneously - a win-win for you and a sure-fire way to stay ahead of the trend and avoid wasting investment on pointless pieces.
It's no secret that 90's is BACK. Think effortless 90's supermodels, ingenue femininity, spaghetti straps, silk camisoles, relaxed tailoring, baby pastels, understated sport luxe, distressed denim, fluid silhouettes and androgynous styling. Sheer fabrics remain prominent alongside monochrome pieces, however this spring summer will see pinks and cobalt blues thrown into the mix alongside hints of citrus yellows and soft purples and creams. While red had it's moment in the sun, it's slowly losing dominance coming into the warmer seasons. This is no reason not to take it through winter, however this should be done subtly. Check out how we're seeing it being done:
In spring summer this will mean bare backs and shoulders and slipping bra straps on tanned skin, however in this 10 degree weather we're going to have to adapt. Think soft knits in baby pinks and creams with flared skirts and pumps - the 90's supermodel. A feminine turtle neck paired with a black leather pencil skirt never goes astray no matter what's trending. Our picks:
Alberta Ferretti silk cami
Michael Lo Sordo Cropped Pink Turtleneck & Frill Pencil Skirt
Finders Keepers Somewhere Cami
Kenzo pleated mini
Michael Lo Sordo silk maxi
Pfieffer De Palmer Maxi
Dion Lee White Wash Dress
Maurie & Eve Trench
The key for this trend is keeping it sexy. Too much of a relaxed shape will make you look like you've bought the wrong size in everything you're wearing, particularly if you're not 6 foot tall like me. For this trend think soft pastels and rich blues mixed with nudes and ivories to create a modern casual look.
Michael Lo Sordo Relaxed Suit Set
Saloni Loretta Wide Leg Pant
Right on trend, these cobalt blue trousers will add a burst of colour to any night-time outfit.
Max Mara Opache Wide Leg Pant
Feminine, modern and chic.
Clu Chiffon Panelled Pinstripe Shirt
UNDERSTATED SPORTS LUXE
Given the surge of sports luxe inspired pieces we've seen over the past couple of seasons, it's no surprise that the trend is here to stay. Having said that, this SS15 sports luxe will see itself shift from obnoxious numbering on the back of tee shirts (if I had a dollar for the number of people I still see wearing the LPD designer team tees...) and mesh logo tanks to a more subtle version of itself. Think stripes, a hint of mesh, sporty cuts, v-neck knits and a lot of cobalt blue.
Alexander Wang Knit Dress
Fendi V-Neck Stripe Knit
Dion Lee Line II Shift Tee Dress
Karl Lagerfeld Cotton Mesh Crop
Boys Club V Neck Knit (if you missed out on Rag & Bone's original!)
Helmut Lang Asymmetric Knit Tank
Country Road Utility Pant
It started with raw, unwashed denims appearing in the collections of leading denim labels, and this season the distressed look is left front and centre of the denim trend reports. The bottom line - the more distressed, the better.
One Teaspoon Freebird Jean
Paige Tyler Boyfriend Jean
Rag & Bone Skinny Destroyed Convoy Jean
Rag & Bone Blue Destroyed Jean
Frame Skinny Rip Noir Jean
Every woman needs a collection of winning go-to pieces for those mornings when getting ready in a hurry means there's no time to try on eight different outfits (normally only to go back to the first one!). A solid collection of basics and timeless pieces is a must - thrown together with a statement piece like an accessory or shoe they work like a charm time and time again. Here's a list that will take you right through winter to summer regardless of the coming and going trends:
The Leather Jacket
I still remember buying my first good quality leather jacket. I was seventeen and working for Sass & Bide, and in my first week I had realised that all the girls had invested in the black cropped leather jacket we were selling at the time. I'd never spent money on a really beautiful leather piece before, but after seeing all the girls arrive to work looking so effortless and cool in this classic piece I had to have it. Since then, I've never looked back, and my collection of one slowly grew to a collection of ten.
Every stylish woman needs to have a classic leather jacket for those moments when you just need to feel, for lack of a better term, boss. It instantly adds edge to any casual outfit and as a bonus, they are extremely warm. Here's our picks for AW14:
Rick Owens Leather Jacket
Balenciaga Biker Jacket
Robert Rodriguez Cropped Jacket
Balmain Military Leather Jacket
Anine Bing Quilted Biker Jacket
Helmut Lang Wither Jacket
The Ankle Boot
Rag & Bone Kerr Boot
For the past few months this has been my go-to boot. They're a great height, a slim shape, and they work with anything from a pleated skirt to my leather pants.
Underground Cuban Winklepickers
This is a label not everyone will be familiar with. A London favourite, Underground are the kings of true Camden style footwear - think creepers and winklepickers. Although some of the styles are not for everyone, these leather Cuban ankle boots are right on trend and about a tenth of the price of the Saint Laurent ones you'll find on Net a Porter. And speaking from experience - they're damn good quality.
Toga Pulla Buckle Boot
These have been on my wishlist for years now... they're THE statement boot to add edge to any outfit.
Saint Laurent Stiletto Ankle Boot
These shoes speak for themselves. Sit back and admire.
Bruno Premi 1903 Ankle Boot Noir
A classic, beautifully made block heel ankle boot. Perfect with a pair of distressed jeans and a blazer for a casual lunch with the girls.
Alexander Wang Anouck Chelsea Boot
An off duty staple, the Alexander Wang's are an investment that don't need a second thought. Not only are they extremely comfy but the attention to detail in these shoes means you'll be getting comments every time you walk out the door.
The Basic Tee
Bassike Scoop V Neck Tee in Grey Marle
If you don't have one of these already, stop what you're doing and go get one in each colour. The organic jersey of these Bassike tees means they're never shrink or stretch, and the cut looks so effortless with a pair of jeans and boots.
Rag & Bone Boy Tee
Helmut Lang Basic Scoop Neck
T by Alexander Wang Jersey Tee
Saint James Galathee Tee
The Leather Pant
If you haven't jumped on the bandwagon and invested in a good pair of leather pants yet, this is the year to do it. They've been on trend for too long now to ignore and whether you're investing in your first or fifth pair - good leather pants are never a bad decision. With a pair of heels and a blazer on a night out, leather pants will make you forget other pants ever existed. Granted, a good pair will set you back at least a grand, but if you buy one big thing this winter, let this be it. The amount of wear and comments you'll get will make them pay for themselves. And if breaking the bank is really not an option, fake it till you make it will a good pair of vegan leather pants - and when I say a GOOD vegan pair I beg you not to fall for the $89 crap they're selling at General Pants Co - because there's nothing worse than plastic leather which cracks after two wears... well, apart from the nylon "wet look" leggings that keep popping up everywhere. Make. It. End.
Here's a few no-fail pairs to get you through the chilly nights:
